RFID to help forestry industry with regulations

     The forestry industry, in particular logging and pulp and paper operations, faces crippling cost pressures and increasing interference from Government Regulation. Leading companies in the forestry industry are searching for new ways to lower operational costs while improving visibility of trucks, routes and sites - and RFID may hold the key.

     Not only are rising fuel and maintenance costs hurting bottom-line profitability, but also insurance and safety premiums continue to increase. Initial solution
     The initial product release, named AT-Virtual, is a system that automates and manages truck scaling at logging sites and at the lumber or pulp mills. The system eliminates manual data entry errors and is said to increase truck throughput by 3%.

     Within the next six months, Balance Bourbeau says it will add RFID capabilities to its entire product suite for log bundle management, mill asset management, wood shavings management, rail car scaling government regulation tools, and finished product management.

Big market
     Guy Bourbeau, president for Balance Bourbeau, said: "We have approximately one hundred current customers who we expect will upgrade to add RFID capabilities.
