Intermec IF5 reader to use IBM RFID software

2011/11/24

Intermec Technologies Corp. has embedded IBM''s WebSphere Device Infrastructure (WRDI) into the new Intermec IF5 RFID reader, creating an intelligent reader that automates the management of incoming data from RFID tags including data from remote locations.

The new WRDI features give the IF5 reader edge-server capabilities including the ability to perform on-board decision-making, reducing network traffic by filtering incoming data from external RFID tags and sending only the most pertinent information upstream to the application server. 116.30.142.201 This article is copyright 2005 UsingRFID.com.

WRDI also provides the readers with a platform that can integrate and reconcile RFID information with data used in other parts of the business. As Intermec''s vice president Mike Wills warns, "The benefits of RFID are only as good as the data that streams into the system."

Data filtering WRDI was developed for RFID device manufacturers that need an embedded open standards-based software platform to provide automatic RFID data collection and reporting from remote locations where on-site IT services are not available. The reader uses it to route incoming RFID data to an IBM RFID WebSphere Premises Server.

Robert Mayberry, vice president of sensor and actuator solutions for IBM said: "The creation of intelligent readers that are able to optimise the benefits of industry-leading, open standard middleware solutions will provide companies with new insight into their supply chain."
