RFID finds role to play in physical games

2011/11/24

In Madrid a new gaming centre with an RFID-enabled difference has opened its doors. The "La Fuga" (meaning "the breakout") game, run by Negone, involves players solving puzzles and physically moving through various obstacles to escape from a futuristic high security jail.

Negone uses RFID tags and readers to identify and track the players inside the 4000-square metre building, which is fully kitted out and decorated for maximum reality and atmosphere. 116.30.142.201 This article is copyright 2005 UsingRFID.com.

The RFID-enabled player tracking system consists of a network of 200 readers and control units. All identification points are connected by means of a CAN bus that collects data from players, activates doors and lights, and checks all devices network-wide for proper operation throughout the games.

Wearable computing
The RFID transponders, provided by Sokymat, are embedded in wrist wearable PDAs that players carry. But RFID is only one of many technologies used in running the game. There are also the wearable PDAs (custom-made for the game), IR positioning, and a software application that puts together a unique game for each individual player.

Negone invested some Euro 16.3 million in the games centre in Madrid, Spain. The technology was integrated and developed in the company''s Barcelona innovation centre. Negone says it plans to expand the concept internationally, starting with new games centres in the United States.
