US high school rolls out wireless student monitor

2011/11/28

McKinley Technology High School in District of Columbia, USA, has deployed Defywire''s ''Mobile Guardian'' system for accessing and logging student information over wireless devices.
The first application of the Mobile Guardian platform allows McKinley''s administrative staff to access student disciplinary information over Wi-Fi-enabled PDAs (personal digital assistants). Mobile Guardian can also give school officials access to students'' attendance records, class schedules, medical information, and parent contact information.

"Before deploying Mobile Guardian, we were only able to access student information on desktop systems, which isn''t helpful to school personnel that are monitoring school grounds," explained Daniel Gohl, principal of McKinley Technology High School. "Now we have an application that roams wherever our personnel and students are. This has greatly enhanced our ability to secure the school, and significantly cuts down staff hours spent completing paperwork associated with disciplinary incidents."

Real-time discipline
Implementation of the system took less than two weeks, and needed only minimal training for the school''s administrative staff. Better still, the positive effects of the technology were immediately felt by the high school, which found that the disciplinary incident reporting application alone eliminated an average of two hours of paperwork each day.

The real-time nature of the incident reporting application has also led to more accurate, uniform and accessible documentation of such incidents - which is fast becoming critical for complying with federal No Child Left Behind guidelines.

Parental alerts
The system is even capable of alerting parents via SMS text message when their child does not attend classes as expected (although this facility is not yet being deployed at McKinley Technology High School). "Students are better protected when staff and parents are better informed," said Jill Stelfox, chairman and CEO for Defywire Inc.

McKinley Technology High School opened in 2004 and provides a fully digital learning environment. McKinley Technology High School provides students the opportunity to pursue an intense focus in bio/medical technology, information technology, and/or broadcast technology.
