RFID market growth forecast: new study

2011/11/29

Research and Markets has announced the availability of a new RFID market forecast report entitled ''RFID: Market Opportunities, Strategies, and Forecasts, 2005 to 2010''.

According to the report, RFID EPC tags represent a high growth market segment in RFID, and markets are expected to grow at a solid pace through to 2009 when tag prices will finally sink to the sought-after ''penny tag'' level. 116.30.151.81 This article is copyright 2005 UsingRFID.com.

Looking to future technologies, because EPC tags are used heavily in retail and the supply chain, and if the market reached shipment in the trillions of tags rather than the millions (as is the situation now), costs could decrease even more significantly by the use of nano-particles applied to paper in the manner that ink is applied now.

RFID markets valued at some US$503 million in 2004 are anticipated to impact multiple market segments including tracking cases and asset management. These applications are expected to drive market growth for RFID technology at an average of 67% per annum, to more than US$3.8 billion in 2011. Major initiatives relate to retailers'' ability to use the electronic tags to track inventory from warehouses through to stores.

Implementation plans by Wal-Mart, Tesco, Metro AG and Target, along with the US Department of Defense, has undoubtedly set a rapid pace for the growth of the industry, and improvements in asset management and return on invested capital will be derived from greater visibility into inventory and shipments while in transit. However, this requires that trading partners - especially carriers and transportation providers - improve their infrastructures to capture this information and then make it available to the manufacturers and retailers as they need it, preferably in real time.
