Intermec unveils Gen 2 Intellitag RFID technology

2011/11/29

Intermec Technologies has introduced its new Intellitag Generation 2 UHF RFID technology, designed to increase performance and provide greater levels of reliability and functionality compared to previous RFID technology. The new system provides features that are most commonly requested by companies implementing RFID.

The new Generation 2 technology provides more reliable reading and writing of tags, "Frequency hopping" which enables the greater read ranges needed by many supply chain operations, multiple communications frequencies (which are needed for global implementations), and the ability to migrate to emerging global standards. 116.30.151.81 This article is copyright 2005 UsingRFID.com.

"Generation 2 has already been demonstrated and will be implemented in 2005," said Intermec''s president, Tom Miller. "Adoption of a common air interface protocol by organisations such as EPCglobal now allows technology providers to introduce products that unleash the power of RFID.

The system is also FCC Part 15 compliant to avoid the need for a separate FCC site license for each US-deployed reader, and also operates under the new higher-power European frequency requirements.

Generation 2 also features "tag persistence" (which can greatly improve tag-read reliability in the field), higher tag-detection reliability, verifiable tag-writing, and also allows for the use of many readers in close proximity to each other using "dense reader mode".

"These are the technical capabilities that allow companies to gain the true business benefits of RFID," said Miller. "Technology providers who recognise the need to offer their customers this level of functionality will find a willing partner in Intermec."

In recent years, Intermec has made available (on a royalty-free basis) its intellectual property to aid adoption of EPC and international RFID standards. Intermec now holds more than 140 RFID foundational and application patents covering many uses of RFID in supply chain applications.--Jan.2005
